‘The history of West Hill Road in St Leonards’, an illustrated talk by Ian Crick.

James Burton’s eldest daughter Eliza lived on what is now West Hill Road.  During the recent renovation of Eliza’s house some surprising discoveries set owners Clare and Ian Crick on a journey to uncover its history. In this illustrated talk, Ian will share what they found and the influences that shaped the development of the property. These include a pre-Burton dwelling, a church relocation, Eliza’s own story and an inheritance.

Ian’s research draws on census and directory records, planning applications, and contemporary reports.  Paintings, maps and photographs all help to visualize the evolution of the house and the early development of the lower part of West Hill Road.

Ian Crick has had long connection with the area and enjoys living in St Leonards in his retirement. He is a member of the Burtons’ St Leonards Society and a Trustee at St Michael’s Hospice.
