Burtons’ St Leonards Society Digital Archive Project

The Society recently moved from its long term home at South Lodge. A move from the Lodge also finds us moving with the times, we have become a Virtual Society without the overheads associated with having a permanent base.

The Society is still passionately engaged in our core work of celebrating our wonderful town with:

• Preservation campaigns
• Historical lectures
• Guided tours
• Special exhibitions
• Social history research
• Community social events.

Over the years the Society has collected various documents and pictures in its work of promoting and conserving what is interesting and unique about our town of St Leonards on Sea. Material has been gathered for exhibitions, lectures, social history research and preservation campaigns.

The Society has resolved to digitise this collection of pictures, maps and documents. It set up an Archive working group tasked with scanning and uploading some of the material we hold. The physical archive has been securely stored whilst we consider a long term home for this material.

As well as permanently recording these historical documents we would like to make them accessible to our members and the general public through the updated Society website.

There is quite a large quantity of material to scan and photograph, initially the archive working group is uploading pictures of interest however as the project evolves we will scan documents for help with historical research.

Please feel free to navigate through the archive pages using the groups to browse or by clicking on the ‘tags’ these link connected pictures by:

Area (Burton’s St Leonards, The Marina, Warrior Square)
Significant Buildings (Crown House, The Royal Victoria Hotel, The Greeba Hotel)
Type of original (photograph, illustration, post card)
The sort of place depicted (public gardens, Villas, Seafront)
Interesting things depicted (Trams, carriages,)

We hope you enjoy making visual connections between the different locations depicted through the ages.
