original watercolour by Sidney Pike (1858-1923), looking south through the archway of James Burton’s North Lodge, down Maze Hill towards St Leonards Gardens. Sidney Pike was an accomplished artist, who was born in Camberwell but lived in Hastings in his latter years, where he died. The watercolour is signed and dated, 1919, during the period when the North Lodge was the home of the famous author, Henry Rider Haggard, who lived there from 1918 to 1923.
