original watercolour attributed to George Fennell Robson (1788-1833), looking south from just below the North Lodge, over St Leonards Gardens to the South Lodge, the Assembly Rooms and the St Leonards Hotel (later renamed the Royal Victoria Hotel), respectively, with the Clock House to the left. This last building was originally intended to be a singular tower, to serve as the public timepiece for the neighbourhood in the age before standard time, but was developed into an eccentric villa in the ecclesiastical gothic revival style instead. This appears to be a contemporary view of the first phase of construction of Burtons’ St Leonards, painted c.1830. Location: BSLS Archive, ex-collection of the late Christopher Maxwell-Stewart.
