original watercolour, unsigned, c.1830, showing the grand neo-classical portico of James Burton’s newly-built Assembly Rooms, seen from the side of the St leonards Hotel (later renamed the Royal Victoria Hotel), its original entrance being to the rear of the building, seen here on the left. The figures of a woman and child, both wearing bonnets, are seen passing an ornate lamppost while crossing the road between the two buildings. An unmade track can be seen winding up through the open ground of the West Hill in the background. Location: BSLS Archive, ex-collection of the late Christopher Maxwell-Stewart.
