Campaigns we have been involved with
More than 50 years after the loss of Burton’s Archery Ground, to the massively unpopular Hastings College building, the Archery Ground was again the centre of a controversial proposed development.
The Burtons’ St Leonards Society in collaboration with local residents’ committees fought under the collective banner STAG (Save the Archery Ground) to oppose proposals for the redevelopment of the Archery Ground site.
Hastings College of Arts and Technology relocated from Archery Road to Station Plaza, adjacent to Hastings Station, and the developers submitted plans to Hastings Borough Council to demolish the former college buildings and build up to 170 residential units. The active opposition achieved a number of moderations to the original proposals including reduction to 121 units and increased opening up of vistas, resulting in the much more harmonious development we see today.
